The new EP “Spring Cleaning!” from Feed the Monkeys is a gosh darn breath of fresh air. Never taking themselves too seriously or sticking to any particular genre they made one of my favorite sets of music I’ve heard this summer. Starting off with “Pumpkin Hill” they showcase the feeling of being with someone you truly adore and I think everyone in that position can identify with the lyrics “I can’t stop myself from smiling when I see you.”
The second song “Shell City” is a dance-able track full of hooks and fantastic guitar work and wouldn’t feel out of place on a Hippo Campus album if they decided to add a little more fuzz and speed to their songs.
Closing out the set is “Falcon Punch” and is a throwback to the early 2000s emo bands like Brand New or Texas is the Reason, but unlike those groups they don’t leave things on a sappy note and instead proclaim “I’m a monkey, woo!” As if they have moved on from the heartbreak and are no longer going to feel like an “object in a mirror” and are sick of feeling like “you’re closer than you appear.”
This is just a great set of songs that should be put on your summer listening list. Be sure to like them on Facebook and follow them on Instagram for news and release dates.
